The Rare Malts Selection was created in 1995 consisting of bottlings predominantly from closed distilleries, distilled in the late 60s, 70s or early 80s and aged for at least 18 years. The success of the range culminated in the creation of an annual Special Releases range in 2001, shortly after Diageo’s establishment.
This series was created by United Distillers (later to be known as Diageo), as they decided to bottle stocks that they held from closed distilleries knowing that the scarceness would prove popular. It just happens that many of these whiskies have received rave reviews and continue to be increasingly popular, if not harder to come by.
